In a decisive move to address Delhi’s growing electricity demand, the Delhi government has laid out an ambitious design focusing on rooftop solar expansion, power network modernization, and sustainable energy relinquishment. With electricity consumption rising fleetly due to population growth, increased use of air conditioners, and electrification of transport, the government aims to ensure dependable force while lowering dependence on conventional power sources. Rooftop solar installations, clean energy integration, and power structure strengthening are central to the strategy unveiled by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and elderly officers during a high-position power sector review meeting. 

The Delhi government’s rooftop solar action dovetails with public efforts under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, aiming to accelerate clean energy relinquishment across homes and government structures. As part of this drive, solar energy systems, renewable power results, and community outreach juggernauts are being boosted to encourage both domestic and institutional participation. The government is also addressing logistical and specialized hurdles in expanding solar capacity within the capital’s limited space. 

Addressing Rising Demand with Rooftop Solar and Renewables 


At the heart of the government’s strategy is a significant drive to ramp up rooftop solar installations across Delhi. Officers stressed that the capital’s power demand peaked at over 8,400 MW in 2025 and is projected to climb sprucely, reaching close to 12,000 MW by 2030 and potentially near 20,000 MW by 2040 if current growth trends continue. Against this background, rooftop solar is deposited not just as a supplementary source of generation but as a crucial element in reducing reliance on reactionary energy—grounded electricity—and bridling emigrations. 

Under the direction of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, departments have been assigned with accelerating rooftop solar installations, particularly on government structures, a move that could both lower functional costs and showcase the megacity’s commitment to renewable energy. Officers also emphasized that adding ménage participation in the Surya Ghar scheme will help harness solar power more effectively across neighborhoods. This scheme complements broader public targets that aim to boost rooftop solar relinquishment across millions of homes nationwide and further strengthen energy sustainability. 

Innovative structure results in a thick urban landscape. 

Delhi’s civic viscosity presents unique challenges for power structure expansion. To overcome land constraints, authorities are exploring innovative options similar to installing power distribution structures beneath flyovers and in other underutilized spaces. This approach is intended to maximize the use of available civic vestiges while perfecting trustability and distribution effectiveness. 

Officers also instructed distribution companies to take over detailed feasibility studies, especially in densely peopled areas where traditional expansion of substations and grid networks faces physical and nonsupervisory limitations. These studies are anticipated to inform strategic investments that will bolster the grid’s capacity to safely and efficiently deliver electricity to end users. 

Massive Capital Investment to Modernize Power Networks 


In line with the government’s forward-looking energy roadmap, a major capital expenditure plan of roughly ₹ 17,000 crore has been outlined for the coming three times. The finances are allocated for strengthening the megacity’s transmission lines, upgrading grid substations, and enhancing last-mile electricity distribution systems through the sweats of Delhi Transco Limited and original power distribution companies (discoms). These investments aim to reduce outages, ameliorate trustability, and prepare the grid to meet unborn demand surges. 

The prioritized upgrades will concentrate on modernizing geriatric structure and planting advanced technologies to enhance system adaptability. As part of this vision, the government seeks to ensure that all constituencies in Delhi benefit equitably from upgraded distribution networks—a critical element for invariant electricity vacuity across all neighborhoods. 

Simplifying solar relinquishment and ending structure Gaps 


Recognizing walls to solar deployment, officers have directed a way to simplify procedures for installing solar panels on agrarian land, a trouble that would further expand clean energy generation beyond civic rooftops. By reducing regulatory hurdles and promoting ease of installation, authorities hope to attract wider participation from different stoner groups, including growers and pastoral communities. 

The meeting also reviewed gaps in distribution structure and stressed the need to address these differences. This action reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that advancements in power force structure keep pace with both the rising demand and the evolving energy geography. 

Overall, Delhi’s intertwined approach—combining renewable energy expansion, network modernization, and innovative civic planning—signals a drive toward a future that prioritizes sustainability, trustworthiness, and indifferent access to power for all residents.
